SHOW INFORMATION

Antigone
By Sophocles
Translation by Diane J. Rayor
Directed by Shana Wride

PLAY SYNOPSIS
From Diane J. Rayor: Antigone begins after Oedipus and Jocasta’s sons have killed each other in a battle over the kingship. The new king, Kreon, decrees that the brother who attacked with a foreign army remain unburied and promises death to anyone who defies him. The play centers on Antigone’s refusal to obey Kreon’s law and Kreon’s refusal to allow her brother’s burial. Each acts on principle colored by gender, personality, and family history. Antigone poses a conflict between passionate characters whose extreme stances leave no room for compromise. The highly charged struggle between the individual person and the state has powerful implications for ethical and political situations today.

Callbacks: March 13, 1 PM to 5 PM, Room 15-100

What to prepare:  Please prepare a monologue from the play Antigone. We will have printed monologues at the audition for you to read from if needed. The script is linked below for you to read and select a monologue from.

Script: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1TnSrB4eT4rL6DrS1Al9cRNTKC-3Og0-3/view?usp=drive_link

For all roles: Please prepare a 30-60 second monologue from the play.  You choose the character that you would like to play.  Please note that you may be considered for a different role in the production. I will have other monologues on hand that I may ask you to prepare for callbacks or on the spot.

Note about the Chorus and Chorus leader:  The chorus and chorus leader play an incredibly crucial role in a Greek play.  It is very important that we have actors that know (or really want to know) how to handle heightened language and movement, so there may be some movement work in callback or auditions.

If you are asked to come to callbacks, you will be provided with sides from the show. If you are unable to attend live auditions, please contact shana.wride@gcccd.edu as soon as possible to discuss a possible accommodation.
