Required materials:    

Mathematics for Elementary teachers - a contemporary approach, 10th edition. Gary L. Musser & William F. Burger A simple calculator, ruler, compass, color pencils or crayons.

                      

 

Course Prerequisites:  Grades of  C or above in MA125.

 

Course Content:
This course covers mainly the geometrical materials that students will learn in elementary school. Topics include advanced counting techniques and probability, direct measurements, standard units, Pythagorean theorem, area of polygons and circles, angles and parallel lines, volume and surface area of 3D objects, deductive geometry and its applications in indirect measurement.

Grades:    The possible grades in this course are A, B, C, D, or F. The cutoffs are as follows,

 

 

Assignments & Exams:               

Class Policies: 

1. No private conversation during lectures, you have plenty of time to exchange ideas with your classmates during lab hours. If you have a relevant question, please raise your hand and ask the instructor.
2. You will be dropped from class if you have more than 3 absences. Frequent late arrivals or early departures will be counted as absences.
3. If you need to leave class early, please inform your instructor in advance whenever possible.
4. Turn off all cellphones and pagers (or change them to vibration mode) during lectures. Absolutely no telephone conversation in lectures, no texting without permission from instructor. 
5. Late HW will be penalized by 2 points per class day.
6. In the event that you are not able to take an exam at the scheduled time, inform your instructor as soon as possible but no later than 24 hours after the exam. And you need to provide proof for your valid excuse, otherwise you will face penalty. 
7. Instructor reserves the right not to give partial credits.
8. No extra credit. No whining.

 

Expectation of Students:

1. You are strongly encouraged to form study groups outside the classroom because this does not only give you chances to learn different perspectives  of the same subject but also gives you valuable chances to practice teaching.
2. Read the textbook and handouts regularly. This course covers a large amount of materials that cannot be all presented in lectures in detail.
3. Attend all lectures and do homework on a daily basis.
4. Actively participate in lectures and particularly in labs. Share your opinion with your group members and be open to different ideas
5. Keep an open mind and a positive attitude to learn new materials. Elementary school curriculum nowadays is more difficult than that in the past.
6. Communicate with the instructor as often as possible either after lecture or during office hours, or through e-mail and phone. Check the web page announcement before every exam.
                                   
    

Math 126 Student Learning Outcomes

• The student will have knowledge of basic geometry vocabulary.
• The student will be able to demonstrate the elementary concepts of statistics.
• The student will be able to demonstrate the elementary concepts of probability.
• The student will be able to think logically, using inductive reasoning to formulate reasonable conjectures and using deductive reasoning for justification, formally or informally.
• The student will be able to write justifications for conjectures and geometric theorems.
• A student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of geometric concepts in the K-8 curriculum.

Supervised Tutoring Referral

1. Students requiring additional help or resources to achieve the stated learning objectives of the courses taken in a Mathematics course are referred to enroll in Math 198, Supervised Tutoring.  The department will provide Add Codes.
    

2. Students are referred to enroll in the following supervised tutoring courses if the service indicated will assist them in achieving or reinforcing the learning objectives of this course:

• IDS 198, Supervised Tutoring to receive tutoring in general computer applications in the Tech Mall;
• English 198W, Supervised Tutoring for assistance in the English Writing Center (70-119); and/or
• IDS 198T, Supervised Tutoring to receive one-on-one tutoring in academic subjects in the Tutoring Center (70-229).

To add any of these courses, students may obtain Add Codes at the Information/Registration Desk in the Tech Mall.

3. All Supervised Tutoring courses are non-credit/non-fee. However, when a student registers for a supervised tutoring course, and has no other classes,  the student  will be charged the usual health fee.

 

Academic Integrity: Cheating and plagiarism (using as one’s own ideas, writings or materials of someone else without acknowledgement or permission) can result in any one of a variety of sanctions. Such penalties may range from an adjusted grade on the particular exam, paper, project, or assignment to a failing grade in the course. The instructor may also summarily suspend the student for the class meeting when the infraction occurs, as well as the following class meeting.
