Professional Development Requirements

Faculty at Grossmont College receive flex credit (professional development hours) in lieu of instruction (time normally spent in the classroom teaching), see below for Full Time and Part-Time obligation and ways in which to fulfill them.

Adjunct Faculty
Full Time Faculty
Hours Required

Adjunct faculty in the credit program much complete one hour of professional development for each hour of her/his weekly assignment (for example, and adjunct faculty member with a three hour lecture assignment must complete three hours of professional development for the semester) (7.16.1 AFT Contract)

20 hours per academic year

Time Frame

Adjunct faculty must submit all documents which demonstrate evidence of completions of their professional devlopment activities no later than the last day of the twelfth (12) week of instruction each semester. (7.16.1 AFT contract)**

Tenured / Tenure-Track faculty must submit all development activities no later than the last day of the twelfth (12) week of instruction the spring semester each year. (7.16.1 AFT contract) **

**Full-time faculty must complete a Faculty Professional Development Contract and submit it to the Department Chair by the end of the first week of the semester.

**Part-time faculty must complete a Faculty Professional Development Contract form  and submit to the Department Chair by the end of Professional Development Week.

Professional development hours performed in excess of fall semester requirements may be rolled over to the subsequent spring semester. In no case may any excess hours be rolled from one fiscal year to the next.  (17.16.1 AFT contract)

Faculty can fulfill the Professional Development Obligation by:

  1. Attending any activity that is posted on the Grossmont College or Cuyamaca College Professional Development Calendar.   

  2. Attending a discipline-specific or teaching and learning conference - Must be approved by the division dean prior to attending.

    1. Forms related to conference attendance, including an Off-Campus Travel Request and funding request can be located here.

  3. Proposing an independent activity- Must be approved by the division dean prior to the activity
    1. A list of independent project proposals, which have either been previously approved, or that the Faculty Professional Development Committee has pre-approved for professional learning, is available here

  4. Participating in any of the webinars or online professional learning activities listed on the approved Webinar/Online learning page. These online learning opportunities have been pre-approved by the Faculty Professional Development Committee and the Distance Ed Coordinator.
