COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this course you will be responsible for reading, selecting, editing, proofreading, and arranging student manuscripts for Acorn Review, the Grossmont College literary magazine.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS


READING MANUSCRIPTS. Copies of all submitted manuscripts will be distributed to each staff member the week prior to when we will vote on them. It is your responsibility to read the manuscripts prior to coming to class and be prepared to discuss and vote on them. Staff members will cast a vote of yes or no. Majority rules, but in the case of a tie, I will cast the deciding vote. Important note: If you are going to be absent, you must still cast a vote on all manuscripts. This can be done by phoning in your vote ahead of time or sending a proxy to class with another student.

EDITING MANUSCRIPTS. Once a manuscript has been accepted for inclusion in Acorn Review, the staff must edit the manuscript for spelling, punctuation, content, etc. This editing may be done as a class, in small groups, or individually, depending on time constraints. After a manuscript has been edited by one or more staff members, I will send it to Word Processing to be typeset.

PROOFREADING MANUSCRIPTS. Once a manuscript has been returned by Word Processing, staff members must proofread the manuscript for errors. As with editing, this process may be done as a class, in small groups or individually, depending on time constraints.

ADVERTISING Acorn Review. As a staff member you may be called on to post flyers, stuff instructor mailboxes, or visit English classes to encourage students to submit manuscripts to Acorn Review. It is important that all staff members share in these activities so that Acorn Review continues to be a vital, popular literary magazine.

EXTRA MEETINGS. No matter how much we urge writers to get their material to us early, the majority of manuscripts come in the last week before the deadline. This is the time when we may have to schedule one or two extra meetings in order to vote on submissions and proof those that have already been typeset. We have approximately three weeks after the deadline to get all the accepted manuscripts to Graphics.


ACADEMIC ACCOMMODATIONS

Students with disabilities who may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to notify the instructor and contact Disabled Student Services & Programs (DSP&S) early in the semester so that reasonable accommodations may be implemented as soon as possible. GRADING

I hope you enjoy this class and get a sense of accomplishment out of judging, evaluating, and editing the manuscripts submitted to us, but how can I grade you on that? The only criterion I have for a grade is how much effort you put into the class.

This is especially true when we have to call extra meetings around our deadline, and it becomes your responsibility to read and vote on all manuscripts submitted to us. Failure to attend all regularly scheduled classes, without prior approval from the instructor, will result in a lower grade.


Note: Any staff member who would like to submit a manuscript may do so at any time prior to the deadline. It will be read and discussed anonymously, along with the other submissions
